The Rolls-Royce 40/50 HP Phantom III was introduced in 1936 as the company’s flagship model. It was powered by a 7.3-liter V12 engine that could produce up to 165 horsepower. The car featured an independent front suspension, hydraulic brakes, and a steel box-section frame, which made it one of the most advanced automobiles of its time.
The Phantom III incorporated advances made in automobile engineering during the 1930s, including a more streamlined body design and a more powerful engine. Other notable features included a fully synchronized four-speed manual gearbox, and a new thermostatically controlled cooling system that ensured the car remained at optimal temperature throughout its travels.
One of the key selling points of the Phantom III was its luxurious interior, which featured appointments such as burled walnut wood trim, sumptuous leather upholstery, and hand-stitched carpeting. The car was designed to provide the ultimate in comfort and refinement, and as such, was often used by royalty, dignitaries, and other VIPs.
Despite its advanced design and impressive performance, the Phantom III was produced in relatively small numbers. Just over 700 were built between 1936 and 1939, making it a rare and highly sought-after automobile among collectors today.
